The idea of birthstones originally comes from biblical times, when 12 precious stones were assigned to the apostles and 12 coloured gems adorned the breastplate of the high priest Aaron (brother of Moses: Exodus 28). These stones were to represent the 12 tribes of Israel.

There have been many interpretations of birthstone charts over the years and these have lead to the modern day associations which are recognised today.
